~ A typical day onboard a Black Dog Tall Ships Kids’ Cruise ~
*Due to the nature of these schooners, onboard the schooners SHENANDOAH and ALABAMA there cannot be set schedule that will apply to each and every day of the cruise.  Elements such as wind, tide, good or bad sailing conditions, or a trip ashore for the kids with the crew can all alter a day-to-day routine






7:00 a.m. WAKE UP:

1.        Wash down: the crew lead the Kids Cruisers through washing down and scrubbing the decks, cleaning cabin tops and sponging down all paint.

2.        Brass and glass are polished and cleaned

3.        Cleaning of heads, companionways and main saloon.  All are swept and sponged clean.

4.        Setting up for breakfast.

8:00 a.m. BREAKFAST:

1.        Following meal, serving and dining areas are cleaned.  Dishes washed and Galley is cleaned.

9:00 a.m. CABIN & BUNK INSPECTION

9:30 a.m. INSTRUCTION WITH CREW

  •  Mon.      Rope & Line Identification
  •  Tue.        Knot Tying
  •  Wed.      Chart Work
  •  Thurs.    Rope & Line Identification
  •  Fri.          Boats & Rigs
  •  Sat.         Rope Chase Competition

10:30 a.m. Swimming over side, trips ashore, etc.

12:00 p.m. LUNCH:

1.        Meal preparation, cleanup and dish washing

1:00 p.m. UNDER WAY:

1.        Before getting under way, all belongings are cleared from the deck and stowed below. Bunks and cabins must be in “ship shape” condition.

2.        All hands are one deck, helping the crew hoist sail and raise the anchor.

3.        All lines are stowed properly, coils either hung or “flemished.”

4.        Cleaning heads, companionways and main saloon.

5.        Kids take turns at the wheel with the captain where they are instructed how to steer and sail.

5:00 p.m. ON THE ANCHOR:

1.        Stowing all sail, coiling down all lines and rigging and deck cleanup.

2.        Swimming over the side.

6:30 p.m. DINNER:

1.        Meal preparation, cleanup and dish washing

8:00 p.m. AFTER DINNER:

1.        Captain’s stories and reading in the main saloon.

9:30 p.m. LIGHTS OUT
